Notation for nxn cubes

Outer Layers

There are 6 outer layers in total. They are the Upper(U), Down(D), Right(R), Left(L), Back(B) and Front(F).

If they are written as U/D/R/L/B/F then you should turn it 90° clockwise as if you are facing it.

If an apostrophe ” ‘ ” is written in front of it, U’/D’/R’/L’/B’/F’, you should turn it 90° anti-clockwise/counter-clockwise as if you are facing it.

If a “2” is written in front of it, U2/D2/R2/L2/B2/F2, then you should turn it 180° in any direction as if you are facing it.

Above is an example of U,U’, and U2 respectively.
Note that the faces change colour as you rotate, so if yellow was on top it would be U but if white is to be on top, then white is U.
This rule applies for all of the 6 faces.

Now that you know notation, you can start with my tutorial here.
